Myths and Fears

There are many fears and misunderstandings about the use of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. Hypnosis means 'trance and is a perfectly natural state. How often have you been driving and realise you can't remember anything of the journey? This is a trance state.

Hypnotherapy

  • It is completely safe.
  • You have to want to be hypnotised.
  • It is a natural state of heightened awareness.
  • You do not become unconscious or go to sleep.
  • If you don't want to tell the therapist something whilst under hypnosis, you won't.
  • You can come out of a trance at anytime, nobody can make you stay 'under'.
  • If you were left in a trance state you would either fall into a natural sleep or wake-up.
  • To be hypnotised you don't have to have a weak will.
  • Everyone is susceptable to hypnosis.
  • The participation of a subject has to be by their consent.
  • You cannot be made to tell the truth under hypnosis.
  • Under hypnosis you cannot be 'made' to do anything you don't want to do, or that goes against your moral judgement, or something that you object to.
