Physical activity is important in achieving relaxation of both the body and mind.
When we exercise we release various chemicals in our bodies:
- Adrenalin - designed to give instant physical energy and mental clarity.
- Cortisone - increases glucose to the muscles and reduces the reaction to injury.
- Endorphins - providing pain-killing and tranquillising properties.
However, endorphins can also be released in times of stress as well as periods of intense
physical activity. Unless these secretions are used by physical actions they can accumulate
over time and leave us with loss of energy and maybe ill health. Just incorporating more
physical activity into your daily life, such as gardening, going for a long walk can
start to make you feel better, give you more energy and thus help you to relax.
