Everything You’ve Wondered About Massage (But Were Afraid to Ask)

Massage is intended to be a relaxing and rejuvenating experience, but if you’re new to it, booking might feel a little daunting. Sometimes, the unknowns can create anxiety, or just make it difficult to fully relax.
Here are some common concerns I hear from people (and have even experienced myself!):
💭 What should I take off, and will I be covered up?
It depends on the treatment you have selected, but don’t worry, I’ll talk you through exactly what to do before you get undressed. You’ll always be draped with a towel or blanket so that only the area being worked on is uncovered. Your comfort and privacy come first at all times.
💭 Do I get to undress and dress in private?
Absolutely. Once we’ve had a chat about the treatment, I’ll leave you to undress in private. The same goes at the end of your session - you’ll always have time and space to dress comfortably before leaving the treatment room.
💭 What if I need the loo half way through?
While it’s a shame to disrupt the flow, if you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go! I have a soft robe and slippers ready for you, and the loo is just next door - so it’s really no big deal.
💭 What if my tummy rumbles…or I break wind?!
Your body is relaxed, your digestive system is active, and sometimes things just… happen. No embarrassment needed - it’s all part of being human and I’ve heard it all before!
💭 Is my body ‘normal’?
If there’s one thing you learn in this line of work, it’s that everyone’s body is different! I can’t stress this enough - I don’t care what your body looks like (or if you shaved your legs!). I believe everyone deserves to enjoy inhabiting the body that has carried them this far in life, lumps, bumps, hairs and all.
💭 How ‘personal’ will the massage be?
Massage is a personal experience by nature, which is why it’s so important that the environment is comfortable, and that your massage therapist is professional, competent and empathetic at all times. Rest assured, intimate areas are strictly off-limits.
💭 Will I get cold during the session?
Everyone’s different, and it can be tricky to gauge exactly what’s right for you, especially if you’ve not been to me before. The massage table can be warmed up, and I even have fluffy socks on stand-by if, like me, you tend to have cold feet! Don’t hesitate to let me know if something needs adjusting to make you more comfortable.
💭 Should I chat during the massage?
It’s completely up to you! Some people love to unwind in silence, and maybe even drift off…others prefer to chat about their day, aches and pains, the kids, whatever! It’s all totally fine by me.
💭 What if I don’t enjoy part of the treatment?
Your comfort is really important to me. Just let me know if something doesn’t feel right, and I can adjust the pressure, technique, or focus, so your massage is comfortable and enjoyable from start to finish. I’m always open to feedback, and if you’re considering making massage part of your regular wellbeing routine, we can work together to get everything just right.
So, I hope that helps take some of the mystery out of massage! If you’re still curious about anything, just send me a message. And remember - it’s your experience, so always speak up and put your comfort first!
